What's the difference, if any, between heart rate and pulse rate? and why?

i%26#039;m a nurse and in our field, both could be used interchangeably. heart rate = pulse rate. they are the same. it is the number of times the heart beats in one full minute. say for example when assessing a patient, it is an SOP to note the HR or PR. there are certain locations of the body where it could be detected and measured. in my opinion, it is more appropriate to use PR when measuring from pulses that are away from the heart such as the brachial, radial, femoral (and so on..) pulses. to be more accurate, measuring the HR on the chest with the use of a stethoscope is recommended. basically, in a normal person, what is measured on the chest area is the same with the pulses but it may vary in pathological cases such as vascular problems of the extremities.

Heart rate and pulse (not usually called plulse rate) are the same thing.

I someone told you they%26#039;re different, they%26#039;re mad.

What%26#039;s the difference, if any, between heart rate and pulse rate? and why?

Your heart rate is the speed per minute at which the herat is beating. Your pulse rate is the palpable (you can feel it) pulses at pulse points in arteries.

They are *usually* in sync, however, in hypovolemia/shock it is possible to have a heart rate but no palpable pulse, or in certain tachycardias it is possible to have a heart rate that can not have a discernable pulse rate.

No difference, just different terminology.
