Yong- while the heart does have its own pacemakers, and it does maintain its own rhythm. The Central Nervous system does REGULATE that rhythm. Through the sympathetic, and parasympathetic nervous systems it increases and decreases the rate (chronotropic effects), and the force of contraction (Inotropic effects) to maintain the bodies blood pressure. All this is based on input the brain receives from special pressure receptors in the renal artery (feeding the kidney), and coronary sinus of the heart. These pressure sensors tell the brain what the blood pressure is. The brain responds by regulating the bodies blood pressure through the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. The same thing happens with your breathing. Through special chemical receptors in the bodies blood vessels which tells the brain the bloods PH and Carbon Dioxide saturation. This in turn makes you breath faster or slower.

I answered true because I was thinking the same thing as the person above (the CNS). So, the brain doesn%26#039;t regulate heart rate. The heart regulates on its own. The heart has its own pacemaker. The electrical impulse starts at the SA (SinoAtrial) node (which is the main pacemaker), then to AV (AtrioVentriular) node, then to Bundle of his, then to Bundle branches, and finally to Purkinje Fibers.

The brain does not regulate heart rate at all, the hearts own pacemaker does, however, if you get into say the fight or flight mechinism, then the nervous systems do secrete chemicals that can have an affect on the heart rate, but normally, the heart regulates itself.
