What happens to my heart rate the fitter i get?

Resting heart rate goes down. I%26#039;ve got bicycle buddies whose resting heart rate is so slow that it always causes medical people a great level of concern.

In addition, your heart / lungs are more efficient, meaning you can do more work (exercise) at a lower heart rate. A newbie will hit 200 while running an 8 minute mile, but an experience runner will maintain 145 - 155 while doing a 6-minute mile.

Your heart rate will decrease as you get more fit. Usually a good resting HR is 60-100. Your average resting rate would decrease which means your heart doesn%26#039;t have to work as hard to pump blood.

There are two types of muscle fibers in our body- red and the white fibers. Red fibers have a lot more capacity to store oxygen and their proportion increases when you exercise.

These muscle fibers due to increased oxygen store are able to function better at times of physical work and so require less effort from heart to provide them oxygen.

Hence people who exercise regularly have a decreased heart rate.

Moreover in athletes the heart is also more developed - just as biceps increase in size with exercise the heart builds muscles too and can work efficiently even with comparatively low heart rate.
