However, that is relative to your overall fitness and a number of other factors.
If you are trying to determine a maximum rate to use for training with a heart rate monitor, I have seen this method described in some of the literature.
After warming up, run 800 meters %26quot;all out%26quot;. That doesn%26#039;t mean try to sprint 800 meters, it means run 800 at a pace that will give you your bets possible time. Walk jog for the same amount of time as you ran. Run a second 800, at the same effort as the first. Immediately take/record your pulse. Use that value for all heart rate related calculations.
If you are counting your pulse, I would only go for 5-10 seconds because if you are at all in shape, your pulse rate will drop rapidly the first minute after you stop. I would count for 6 seconds and then multiply the count by 10.
